The holidays are often a time of indulgence. With all the holiday parties and seasonal food around, it can be hard to stay on track with diet and exercise. If you’ve fallen out of your fitness routine this holiday season, you’re not alone.

There are a variety of ways to get back into training in the New Year or other holidays both in and out of the gym:

  1. Set goals

Goals are one of the most important parts of getting back into exercise. Without goals you would be aimlessly walking on the house floor or treadmill. Goals do not have to be massive scary goals. Little goals can help us follow a path to a major target. For example, aiming to exercise 3 times this week to help lead to a 6 month goal of 15kg weight loss.

2.  Alter your diet in addition to exercise

While family obligations this time of year make it hard to find time to train, the holidays usually make it more challenging to stick to a healthy diet. When preparing to get back into your fitness routine, don’t forget to return to fueling your body correctly. You will need proper nutrients to help get your body back in shape. Focus on staying hydrated and adding good carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into your diet. After a workout, eat or drink something within 15 minutes to refuel.

3. Find a gym partner

Finding someone to train with, whether it’s a husband, wife or best friend, can boost enjoyment levels during exercise. When training with a partner it will keep you more accountable as you have another person relying on you. It can also alleviate the fear associated with exercising alone as you two are going on the journey together!

4. Stay consistent

Consistency is key! There is no way around it. There is no quick fix. The more often you do it the easier it will become. It doesn’t take long to build a new habit. So it won’t be long until exercise becomes a part of your daily routine and you will be on your way to a healthier you!

5. Involve the family

If you have a big family and struggle to find that alone time, don’t give up. Involve the family! Take the kids down to the park, go for a walk together or even just kick the footy around. Get the whole family moving and become healthy together!

6. Enjoy exercise

The most important part of exercise is to find a type of exercise you enjoy. There are so many different ways to exercise that it doesn’t have to be boring. Give different types a go and see what you like. You won’t know if you don’t try!

Empower your wellbeing and reconnect with your best you!
